Hands-On History Children's Workshop: Native American Mounds

The Historic Indian Agency House will host another installment of their popular “Hands-On History” youth clinics, on Saturday, July 20th from 9am - Noon.  This fun and educational workshop will concentrate on the Native American tradition of mound building, with an emphasis on the moundworks of the Ho-Chunk tribe.   With surviving examples yet dotting the landscape of the Americas, these often massive works of collaborative art were a cultural practice of great spiritual significance to the indigenous populations.

The Agency House, which sits on historic Ho-Chunk lands, has a long Native history, making it a particularly appropriate setting to share the arts and traditions of our country’s earliest inhabitants.

Young participants will learn about the history, construction methods and cultural significance of mounds, including linear, conical and effigy mounds, with a specific emphasis on the Ho-Chunk (Winnebago) and the relatively brief appearance of mounds within their history.

After this introduction, the museum’s educational staff will then lead the group in a team-building activity where they will built their own mound on the grounds of the site, with the session wrapping up with each young guest getting a chance to create their very own miniature mound to take home.  Midway through the workshop, a snack break will help the children re-charge.  In addition, all participants will receive a copy of the Wisconsin Historical Society’s “Water Panthers, Bears, and Thunderbirds: Exploring Wisconsin’s Effigy Mounds,” a $9.95 value by itself!

The workshop is recommended for children ages 7 to 12.  The cost is $7 per person with reservations strongly suggested. (Please note that Supporters Family members will receive a reduced rate of $5 per child.)

The Great Circle Foundation has generously provided supporting funds for this children’s event, directly in line with their mission to make innovative educational programming available to all. Their generosity allows us to offer this workshop for a fraction of the actual cost of craft supplies, planning and implementation.

The Historic Indian Agency House is owned and operated by the National Society of the Colonial Dames of America in the State of Wisconsin. The site is open to the public May 15 to October 15 annually, and hosts a wide variety of adult and children’s programming throughout the year. Call Director Destinee Udelhoven at 608-742-6362 with any questions or to make reservations for the Native American Mounds Workshop.
