Historic Indian Agency House Hands-On History Workshop

The Historic Indian Agency House will host another installment of their popular “Hands-On History” youth clinics, on Friday, July 13 1pm-3pm.  This fun and educational workshop will concentrate on the Native American tradition of basket weaving, a practical and artistic custom prevalent in many American indigenous cultures. The Agency House, which sits on historic Ho-Chunk lands, has a long Native history, making it a particularly appropriate setting to share the arts and traditions of our country’s earliest inhabitants.

Participants will learn about the history and cultural importance of basket making, with a specific emphasis on the Winnebago (now Ho-Chunk) and their basket traditions. The museum’s educational staff will discuss how such baskets were used, what materials were used in their construction and the techniques used to craft them. Each young guest will then get the chance to create their very own basket to take home.

To accommodate the expected high demand for this workshop, two sessions are being offered, with a limit of 15 participants per session. Because of the somewhat intricate nature of the basket-making portion of this workshop, the event is recommended for children ages 9 to 15. Children younger than 9 are allowed to register, but they must have an adult chaperone (age 18 or older) to assist them. The cost is $5 per person with reservations strongly suggested. (Please note that Supporters Family members will receive a reduced rate of $3 per child.)

The Great Circle Foundation has generously provided supporting funds for this children’s event, directly in line with their mission to make innovative educational programming available to all. Their generosity allows us to offer this workshop for a fraction of the actual cost of craft supplies, planning and implementation.

The Historic Indian Agency House is owned and operated by the National Society of the Colonial Dames of America in the State of Wisconsin. The site is open to the public May 15 to October 15 annually, and hosts a wide variety of adult and children’s programming throughout the year. Call Director Destinee Udelhoven at 608-742-6362 with any questions or to make reservations for the Native American Basket Weaving Workshop.
