Historic Indian Agency House Living History Weekend

The Historic Indian Agency House is hosting their 3rd annual living history event on Saturday, September 24, 2011 from 9AM to 5PM.  As part of our ongoing 2011 military theme, this year’s living history event will transport you back in time to the tense and intriguing Black Hawk War era.  The event’s official title is “We Must Prepare Ourselves: The Black Hawk War at the Portage, an 1832 Living History Weekend.”

On September 24th, visitors to the site will get the chance to observe and interact with a host of 19th-century character in an authentic historic setting, including Indian Agent John Kinzie and his wife Juliette (original inhabitants of the Agency House), militia men, a soldier and officer’s wife from Fort Winnebago, and an frontier doctor.  These experienced interpreters will immerse visitors in the somewhat chaotic atmosphere of 1832, as European settlers, traders, and those stationed at Fort Winnebago braced themselves for the violence and bloodshed of the so-called Black Hawk War that threatened to make its way to the portage.

Historic demonstrations, activities, and special museum house tours throughout the day will help visitors better understand the context and story of the Black Hawk War, with a specific emphasis on the relationship of John Kinzie and the Ho-Chunk people—who ultimately decided to remain neutral within the conflict.

At 11AM, 1PM and 3:30PM, catch a musket firing demonstration. Then, at 2PM, join us for a “19th-century Firearms Care, Collecting & Use” presentation, featuring a discussion of one of the site’s most prized artifacts, a 1741 Brown Bess. Finally, jump on a special guided tour of the Indian Agency House at 10AM, noon, or 4PM, where our costumed interpreters stationed throughout the house will share their knowledge of 19th-century medicinal practices, outdoor cooking, and other historical topics.

The participating reeneactors are experienced educators with an interest specifically in the 1830s and Black Hawk War era.  And they can’t wait to share their knowledge with you!

This event is free to the public, except for the guided tours for which there is a minimal fee.

“We Must Prepare Ourselves” is made possible by a generous grant from the Great Circle Foundation, Inc. of East Northport, New York.  For information regarding this and any other Historic Indian Agency House event, call Director Destinee Udelhoven at (608) 742 – 6362.
