Native American Flute-Making Workshop

2-day adult workshop led by instructor William Quackenbush, enrolled Deer Clan member of the Ho-Chunk Nation who currently serves as the Tribal Historic Preservation Officer. Learn the history of the Native American courting flute, then make your own flute and practice playing it. Reduced participation fee of $75 per person (offset by grant funding) covers instruction and all flute-making supplies; min. 12/max. 15. Register by August 22.
Since the beginning of time, Native American cultures have utilized music as an integral part of life. Whether for entertainment, traditional use or for spiritual connection, most today will recognize that music plays a vital role in most cultures.

One such instrument attributed to Native Americans, is their use of courting flutes. Please join us as we learn about the history of the Native American courting flute as told by Ho-Chunk People. During this two day instructional course, everyone will also learn how to make and then play their very own flute.

Instructor: William Quackenbush is an enrolled Deer Clan member of the Ho-Chunk Nation. He has worked for the Nation’s Heritage Preservation Department for 14 years and serves as the Tribal Historic Preservation Officer. William learned making traditional courting flutes from his grandfather at an early age, and now enjoys passing on the traditional practice of flute making.

Items to Bring: Sack Lunch, Work Gloves, Family Stories and Reflections.

Fees: $75.00 per Registrant – (Covers the material cost to make a red cedar flute and protective case).  Please note: The course fee is drastically reduced due to the generous support of the Great Circle Foundation that is financing the consulting and instructor stipend expenses associated with this unique opportunity.
