Here is just a sampling of the music you might here that night.
ECHOES FROM CAMP RANDALL
A few selections that seemed to capture the spirit of this memorable season: a unique version of Richard Rodgers’ My Favorite Things … Aaron Copland’s inspiring Fanfare For The Common Man … Swingtown … and the inevitable tuba tune!
MOTOWN: FIFTY YEARS OF HITS
Without question the Motown Sound captured the spirit of the country … was an influential factor on society … and secured an enviable place in American history. The Wisconsin Band celebrates a half-century of memorable music: “The Motown Sound!”
SLAUGHTER ON 10THAVENUE
Slaughter on 10thAvenuenow enjoys a unique place in American music as a ballet … as a concert work in symphony halls … as a foundation for jazz renditions … and it has become a favorite of Wisconsin’s own Madison Scouts Drum and Bugle Corps. The music is inventive and timeless. The Wisconsin Band is pleased to present their rendition of Rodgers’ Slaughter on 10thAvenue.
THAT’S A DUMB SONG!
We present some “dumb songs” from the fields of rock and roll … doo-wop … country music … and “pop” songwriters. These songs may not have enriched listeners musical tastes, but they’re fun: Wooly Bully (as performed by Sam the Sham and the Pharaos), Help Me Rhonda by The Beach Boys, Ob-la-di by The Beatles … Elvira … Mr. Roboto … and the doo wop Get A Job.
UW BAND: A 125THANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION
We offer some musical selections actively performed by the University of Wisconsin Band in the various eras as we celebrate: The University of Wisconsin … 125 years and counting!
KOHL CENTER CLASSICS
The Kohl Center is widely acknowledged as one of the toughest arenas in the country for visiting teams, whether it be on the hardwood or on the ice sheet. Visiting coaches and players all know it will be raucous … loud … and electrifying. In the middle of all the energy is the Wisconsin Band urging the crowd on with traditional favorites and with such new arrangements as Doc Severinsen’s Brass Roots … the Cole Porter classic What Is This Thing Called Love? … Rock & Roll #2 … and the always-engaging Space Badgers.
THREE DOG NIGHT
At the peak of their popularity Three Dog Night regularly sold out venues all over the world, and today, as they celebrate their 40thanniversary, the music of Three Dog Night can be heard in numerous motion pictures, TV ads, and even on Broadway. Our “Sounds of Three Dog Night” includes: Joy To The World … One … Old Fashioned Love Song … Black and White … and Sham ba la.
GLEE
For those who love good music Glee offers a variety of music unrivaled by any other entertainment medium. On any given program you can hear music ranging from 1940s swing, to Lady Ga Ga, to The Beatles, to Journey, to Frank Sinatra and Broadway. Here is a sampling of the wide musical diversity that is a regular part of Glee! Don’t Stop Believin’ … The Lady Is A Tramp … Bad Romance … You Keep Me Hangin’ On … and Over The Rainbow.
EVITA
After a huge success in London, (where it opened in 1978 and ran for over 2900 performances), Andrew Lloyd Weber’s controversial musical Evita opened in New York 30 years ago. The work was able to survive some highly critical reactions and remained on Broadway for nearly 4 years. In telling this story the music ranges from the splendor of Italian opera to hard driving contemporary rock. The Wisconsin Band is pleased to present a tribute to Andrew Lloyd Weber’s landmark work Evita.
THE 5THQUARTER
At the end of the football season Pasadena was once again introduced to the uniqueness of the 5thQuarter … and it was obvious the appeal had not been diminished after an 11-year absence. The fact is the 5thQuarter has never really ended whether it be in Camp Randall … Florida … Texas … California … or any other of the states the Wisconsin Band and their fans visit. Plan to flap your arms like a chicken … bounce around to Tequila … and polka to You’ve Said It All. There will be singing … dancing … and just a lot of fun! It’s all a part of this unparalleled Badger tradition.
