"Wisconsin's Native Peoples: Exploring History Where It Happened" Children's Workshop
Saturday Apr 6, 2013
Historic Indian Agency House
Destinee Udelhoven 742-6362
Saturday, April 06, 2013
Session 1: 9:30AM to 11:30AM
Session 2: 1:00PM to 3:00PM
Explore the site where John Kinzie served as Federal Indian Agent to the Ho-Chunk people (with his wife Juliette, grandmother of Girl Scout founder, Juliette Gordon Low), on lands the Ho-Chunk inhabited for hundreds of years before French explorers Father Marquette and Joliet “discovered” the portage in 1673. Discuss the history of the Ho-Chunk and learn more about their culture, including their sustainable way of life. Includes a Native American-themed tour of the 1832 Agency House site, with a special focus on the site’s still-in-progress Native American Cultural Site and Native Prairie Garden (an ongoing and evolving educational project). The session wraps up with a hands-on craft session with a focus on the Plains Indians’ tradition of hide painting.
This activity session fulfills the requirements for a Historic Indian Agency House program patch (exclusive to the site), and all participants will receive this patch upon completion of all related activities. $11.00 per child; pre-payment and registration required; registration deadline is Friday, March 29, 2013. Recommended for ages 6 to 12. A maximum of 25 participants per session will be allowed.
PLEASE NOTE: Although this workshop is geared towards Girl Scouts (troops or individuals), the general public (boys and girls!) is welcome to join in on the fun.
