Now Hiring: Part-Time Historical Interpreters

Join Our Team and Bring Wisconsin’s Past to Life!

Are you passionate about history and eager to share stories from Wisconsin’s past? Our historic site is seeking enthusiastic part-time Historical Interpreters for 9–10 hours per week, starting May 15th and continuing through the season. This is a fantastic opportunity to portray fascinating historical figures, engage visitors of all ages, and help make local history come alive!

Position Overview

  • Role: Historical Interpreter (Part-Time)
  • Hours: 9–10 per week, Wednesday–Sunday (Saturday and Sunday required, with some flexibility)
  • Wage: $16.00 per hour
  • Season: Begins May 15th
  • Property Hours: 9:30 a.m.–4:30 p.m.

Role Responsibilities

  • Conduct guided tours (in character) using provided scripts, highlighting the site’s unique features, historical periods, and artifacts.
  • Portray historical characters and bring their stories to life for visitors.
  • Assist with daily opening and closing routines for the property.
  • Support exhibits and activities in our Visitor Center.

Unique Opportunities

As a Historical Interpreter, you’ll have the chance to represent notable figures from the era of ‘the portage’ and the settlement of Wisconsin pre-statehood, the fur traders cabin (1820–1848), and the Garrison School (life in a one-room schoolhouse 1850-1900). If you have a favorite historical character, let us know — we welcome interpreters with specific interests!

Desired Qualifications

  • Excellent communication and public speaking skills
  • Experience in theater arts, education, public speaking, or customer service is highly valued
  • Enthusiasm for history and engaging with diverse audiences
  • Must love old buildings!
